Understanding Infertility
Transvaginal Ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasounds are pelvic ultrasounds that use sound waves to look at your internal fertility organs.
For infertility, this ultrasound can show any issues with the uterus or ovaries. Additionally, using a transvaginal ultrasound can show the basal antral follicle count.
On day 3 of your cycle, the doctor will perform this ultrasound to look at the follicles on your ovaries. A high or normal amount of follicles will mean good egg supply or count. A low number means that response may be poor or there may be some ovarian issues. This is especially important during IVF.[1]
This ultrasound can also show cysts on the ovaries or the thickness of the uterine lining.
