Sonohysterogram (SHG)

A sonohysterogram (SHG) is an ultrasound of the uterus that creates pictures using sound waves. The SHG is painless and easy to perform.

It is performed by inserting a thin tube (catheter) into the cervix. Saline solution is that fed through the tube and expands the uterus slightly. A transvaginal ultrasound wand is then placed into the vagina in order to capture pictures of the reproductive system.[1]

This procedure can look more closely for a reason for infertility, such as polyps, endometriosis, or irregularities in the lining or uterine shape.

Cramping or light bleeding may occur, but as it is minimally invasive, you can leave as soon as the SHG is finished.[2]
