Welcome to Understanding Infertility.

Welcome to Understanding Infertility, a website dedicated to presenting the complex world of infertility in a scientific but easy to understand way. Through various research and rigorous data gathering, I have compiled as much information as I could to better encompass all areas of infertility.

Infertility is described as the “failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.”[1] This includes both primary infertility (the inability to conceive a child) and secondary infertility (the inability to conceive after a previous live birth.) For women aged 35 or older, this time is reduced to 6 months or more. Around 1 in 8 women (12%) of women aged 15-44 years old suffer from infertility.[2]

There are many risk factors that can cause both male and female infertility. These factors include excess alcohol consumption, smoking, age, weight and poor diet.[3] There are also a variety of physical factors that can cause infertility. For more information on these, please visit the “Common Problems” page in the menu bar above.
